Erik sits on the Board of Directors for the Vancouver Island Special Needs Hockey Association (VISNHA), which is a non-profit organization aimed at fundraising to support special needs hockey teams.
Erik, in cooperation with the City of Port Alberni Parks & Recreation Department, has established an adaptive hockey program in Port Alberni, the Port Alberni Mountaineers. The hope is to create a team that can begin to play games against other Vancouver Island teams in Nanaimo and Campbell River.
The Adaptive Hockey program provides teens (14+) and adults with cognitive, physical or behavioural challenges the skills required to play the game of hockey. No skating ability is required, but participants should be steady on their feet. Full hockey gear is required however we will be able to assist those people who need access to gear.
The program runs in the fall and winter sessions. Additional detail on program dates and fees is available in the current City of Port Alberni Healthy Living Guide.
